Adam Knernschield has been a resident of Lake County for more than 40 years. In 1976 he opened The Carpet Man in Clearlake and joined Floors To Go in 1992. With more than 200 stores, we offer the buying power of the big box stores while keeping the service local. It has always been his goal to provide small town service with big city selection and prices.
In January 2020, The Carpet Man became a second-generation flooring store when Adam passed the business to his son AJ Knernschield and 2 long time employees, Nancy Johnson, and Robert Keyes. Together the trio are continuing The Carpet Man tradition.
AJ Knernschield grew up in Hidden Valley Lake. During high school, AJ learned flooring from the bottom up starting as an installer. After graduation he spent several years working in the auto industry, designing and building high end street rods. This was a great way to hone his artistic skills and his eye for design. AJ and his family live in Hidden Valley Lake and have just welcomed a new baby girl.
Robert Keyes has been a Lake County resident on and off for more than 25 years. He has been the lead installer at The Carpet Man for the past 15 years and has a total of over 25 years of flooring installation experience. Bob also has a love of good food and fun. Whether a maître d at high end restaurants in Marin, bartending at Konocti Harbor Resort or cooking for his community in Spring Valley - Bob enjoys people and providing a great experience.
Nancy Johnson has been a lifelong resident of Clearlake. Shortly after graduating Lower Lake High School, Nancy began working at The Carpet Man. With 35 years of experience at The Carpet Man, she knows it all – from sales to ordering to scheduling. She takes the saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person” to heart. Not does Nancy work full time at The Carpet Man but serves on the SPCA of the Lake County board of directors, volunteers at the SPCA 3 days a month and fosters kittens from bottle feeding to adoption.
